The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas at the first graduation of Luyanzi Institute

I presided at the first graduation ceremony at Luyanzi Institute of Technology in Bweyogerere, Kampala. I conferred certificates and diplomas in Information Technology, Computerised Business Accounting, Fashion and Design, and Chinese Language and Culture to an enthusiastic group of graduands in the presence of the Ambassador of China to Uganda, H.E. Zhang Lizhong. I congratulated the Directors of the Institute, Eng. and Mrs Sooma on reaching this milestone and I thanked them for investing in our youth through training in technology. I emphasised the role of technology in Uganda’s journey to an industrialised economy.

Vice Chancellor stands with the first female student of Gondar University, Ethiopia at the 70th Anniversary celebrations

At the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Gondar University in Ethiopia, I have met the first female student of the university. I have also participated in the launch of the Ethiopia Research Consortium. I have congratulated them on the launch of the Consortium and emphasised that it is through such collaboration that we will produce a critical mass of researchers for Africa.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and President of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center signing Memorandum of Understanding as other officials witness

I signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the President of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University. We have agreed to collaborate in advancing ophthalmology at our two institutions. Remarkably, one in every six ophthalmologists in China is a graduate of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, making it a leading global research hub in this field. I look forward to the fruits of our collaboration.

This afternoon we bid final farewell to a great son of Uganda and a dedicated servant of Makerere. We will always remember Prof. Luboobi as an intellectual who laid the foundation for a research-led Makerere. Farewell, great son of Africa.
