Attending The Africa Regional Forum

Published

In my address to the plenary session on the role of science, technology and innovation at the ongoing 11th Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, I have underlined the urgent need to address the very low enrolment in higher education in Africa, which stands at a meagre 6% compared to the global average of 32%. I was happy to meet the Hon. Gabriel Changson Chang, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of South Sudan, a great friend of Makerere University, and Prof. Charles Esimone, former Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and President of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center signing Memorandum of Understanding as other officials witness

I signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the President of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University. We have agreed to collaborate in advancing ophthalmology at our two institutions. Remarkably, one in every six ophthalmologists in China is a graduate of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, making it a leading global research hub in this field. I look forward to the fruits of our collaboration.
