In Dr. Julius Kikooma’s view, and clearly from his research findings, it is safe to say that yes, gender plays a vital role in entrepreneurship today, especially in Uganda!
Discussing his research with the audience, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) – DVCAA’s office hosted Dr Julius F. Kikooma’s PhD dissemination workshop on 25th March, 2011 under the title of his research report, “Doing Entrepreneurship in Uganda: The Social Construction of Gendered Identities of Male and Female Entrepreneurs”.
“In Uganda, women account for an increasing share of the self-employed, especially in small business sector and there is a growing recognition of the role the sector plays in building the country’s economy.” Dr. Kikooma highlighted this, in his presentation, as one of the reasons as to why he took the gender dimension in his research.
However, the discussant, Dr. Warren Byabasaija, took the opposite dimension as he expressed that entrepreneurship research focuses more on processes than who the successful entrepreneur is. Dr. Byabashaija continued to discuss that success in entrepreneurship is more embedded in the social context but not driven by it!
