HERS-EA Sixth Academy

Higher Education Resource Services, East Africa (HERS-EA) ACADEMY provides an intensive leadership and management development curriculum which equips women with skills needed to advance their personal career development and successfully navigate the institutional environment where they operate. The goal of the HERS-EA training is to raise the proportion of women in leadership and management positions in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Eastern Africa (Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Uganda).

The program is focused on managing and leading change, human resource development and institutional effectiveness. The ACADEMY prepares every participant to strengthen and expand her leadership skills by working closely with HERS-EA resource persons and staff. Participants will find the ACADEMY to be a safe environment to share confidential matters.

Following five previous successful Academies, the Sixth HERS-EA ACADEMY will be offered in a one-week blended (virtual and in-person) format (July 3rd-7th 2023).

Theme: “‘AND STILL I RISE’: ENABLING YOU TO RISE ABOVE AND BEYOND INSTITUTIONAL AND PERSONAL BARRIERS TO WOMEN LEADERSHIP.

1. Who Should Attend?

HERS-EA welcomes aspiring dynamic leaders from diverse backgrounds to attend the ACADEMY, to share and learn from multiple institutional perspectives. There will be guidance from women with a wealth of experience in higher education, national academic organizations, government and non- governmental organizations. Participants are expected hold mid to senior-level positions and bring expertise from all parts of a college or university. They also represent a range of national groups, ages and years of experience in higher education and other fields.

2. Twelve reasons why you should register:

  1. There is no known leadership curriculum for women, delivered by women. Join a growing body of skilled, confident women alumnae (see testimonies).
  2. Topics and delivery methods are informed by participants’ views so, you will help in shaping future academies.
  3. Your leadership project may be converted into a fundable grant.

You will:

  1. Have tangible take-home deliverables (like a career map and a leadership project).
  2. Learn how to land your first big grant!
  3. Learn how to Publish and NOT Perish.
  4. Be guided to turn your hobbies into successful economic enterprises.
  5. Develop MOUs with research partners, institutions and organizations.
  6. Be connected with accomplished local and international mentors.
  7. Be inspired to learn about HERS-EA alumnae amazing career progression from alumnae testimonies!
  8. Be prepared for TOP LEADERSHIP POSITIONS especially in Higher Education Institutions.
  9. Join an active and supportive HERS-EA sisterhood!

3. Applying to the ACADEMY:

All applicants should download and fill the Registration Form (available at www.HERSEA.org) and return by Thursday June 1, 2023.

A complete application includes:

  • a) A brief 1-page CV (focus on employment history, responsibilities and achievements)
  • b) Passport size photograph
  • c) A brief description of developmental project you expect to initiate at your campus or workplace (maximum 200 words, see samples)
  • d)
    • i) Pay registration fee of USD 150 or UGX 600,000. Early bird discount applies up to April 30, 2023 as follows: Registration by March 31, 2023 will be 90% off, by April 30, 2023 will be 70% off.
    • ii) For residential participants early bird discount does not apply, Pay USD 1,000 or UGX 3,500,000.

Makerere University Waste Management Boosted by Centenary Bank

Waste Management efforts at Makerere University have been boosted by a donation of 30 waste bins by Centenary Bank’s Makerere Branch. The bins received on Monday 11th May 2026 in the Freedom Square by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe in the company of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Prof. Sarah Ssali, Deputy University Secretary, Mr. Simon Kizito and other officials were handed over by the Branch Manager, Mr. Sunday Julius.

Appreciating the donation from Centenary Bank on behalf of University Management, Prof. Nawangwe noted that Makerere University strives to maintain “the cleanest environment in Kampala”, especially as a good example to future leaders, the students.

Acknowledging earlier donations to the Halls of Residence by Centenary Bank, Prof. Nawangwe described the ceremony as “the beginning of a long journey of collaboration in environmental stewardship,” with separation of plastics from biodegradable waste earmarked as the next step in user education.

In his remarks, Mr. Sunday noted that the donation was in line with the Bank’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) objectives, particularly the Social component, where supporting institutions with waste management facilities to enhance hygiene is key. “It is important for Centenary Bank to give back to the society where it makes money”, he emphasized.

Describing Makerere University as the “main institution that Centenary Bank operates a branch”, Mr. Sunday recognised the donation as a step in the right direction with a valuable partner.

The newly-donated bins will be placed in various public locations under supervision of the Estates and Works Directorate.

Bachelor of Laws Pre-Entry Examination Results 2026/2027

The office of the Academic Registrar has released the results for Bachelor of Laws Pre-Entry Examination 2026/2027 held on Saturday 18th April, 2026.

Candidates who scored 50% and above passed the examination and have been recommended to the Admissions Committee for consideration. However, the candidates who passed have to submit an application where Bachelor of Laws is among the programme choices in the application system here: https://apply.mak.ac.ug.

Candidate who are not satisfied with their results may appeal within two weeks from the date of the release of results.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe signed on behalf of Makerere University and Rev. Robert A. Dowd, the 18th President signed on behalf of the University of Notre Dame. The ceremony, which was held at the University of Notre Dame campus at South Bend, Indiana was witnessed by Dr. Lorna Magara, the Chairperson of the Council of Makerere University, who led the Mak delegation.
