The Partnership for Cohort research and Training (PaCT) is a collaboration among African Institutions and Harvard School of Public Health . The African Cohort Collaborative will be a landmark study with immense capacity to influence health in Africa and around the world well in to the 21st Century and will be used to educate scientists at institutions of higher learning everywhere on the effective management of chronic diseases in resource-poor settings.
PaCT has begun an ambitious project to start cohort studies that include 500,000 participants across Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa, using innovative technologies like mobile phones, which are widely used over Africa, to retrieve data and conduct follow-up surveys with participants. Therefore, it was against this background that a team from Harvard School of Public Health consisting Hans-Olov Adami , Chair, Department of Epidemiology, Michelle Holmes , Ass. Prof. of Epidemiology and Shona Dalal , Research Associate, Department of Epidemiology made a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba on 22nd January 2010. They were accompanied by Dr. William Bazeyo , Dean, Makerere University School of Public Health and Dr. Fred Wabwire-Mangen, Ass. Prof, Makerere University School of Public Health.
Prof. Baryamureeba thanked the team for their timely visit and hoped that this collaboration, an investment in Africa’s scientific future, will go a long way in educating scientists in Makerere and Uganda on the effective management of non-communicable diseases.
