The Ambassador of France to Uganda, H.E. Xavier Sticker on Friday 19th January 2024 visited Makerere University to familiarize himself with the French Corner, the French Section of the Department of European and Oriental Languages and institution’s Internationalisation function. He was officially received by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration), Prof. Henry Alinaitwe, the University Secretary, Mr. Yusuf Kiranda as well as various leaders.
Welcoming the H.E. Sticker, Prof. Henry Alinaitwe emphasised that Internationalisation is prominent on the Universityās strategic agenda, and the International Office is in the process of being strengthened so as to better support this function, and ensure an environment conducive to the welfare of international students.
āTherefore, any support rendered to this office in terms of language and feedback will be helpful so as to better serve our international stakeholders. Although we are currently hosts to students from over 40 nationalities, we could have more, because Africa alone has over 50 countriesā said Prof. Alinaitwe.

The University Secretary in his remarks reiterated that the International Office is at the heart of coordinating visits by international delegations and supporting the teaching and learning function by providing efficient services to international students and visiting academics.
āThe target is to facilitate them through the entire chain from admission to registration to processing entry visas, study permits and making sure that when the international students are here, they are homeā remarked Mr. Kiranda.

Additionally, Mr. Moses Rutahumbya, one of two Administrative Assistants at the International Office, the other being Ms. Betty Nabisubi, noted that the unit also facilitates mobility programmes for Makerere University Students visiting partner institutions.
H.E. Xavier Sticker in his remarks noted that his visit was aimed at acquainting himself with the premises and operations of the Campus France Office at Makerere and how it facilitates access by students to French Universities.
āI can say that we are happy with the number of Ugandan students who have gone to study in France and returned. The number of 60 students currently studying in France could be betterā remarked the French Ambassador.

H.E. Sticker emphasized the need to enhance the infrastructure and visibility of the International Office. He underscored the importance of effective promotion, particularly among students interested in studying in France, to bolster the office’s standing.
Additionally, the Ambassador noted that it was important to ensure that students who return from French Universities form an association through which experiences can be shared.
The visit not only strengthened ties between Makerere University and the French Embassy but also provided a platform for discussing pivotal strategies to enhance the International Office’s efficacy. The collaborative efforts discussed during the visit are poised to elevate the office’s visibility and infrastructure, contributing to a more enriching experience for students both from France and around the globe.
Makerere University on 23rd January 2026 hosted the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) validation meeting of the draft minimum standards for implementing Competence-Based Education (CBE) in Higher Education Institutions. The meeting held in the Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility Auditorium brought together Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Principals and Academic Registrars from Higher Education Institutions in Uganda.

Hosted by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Prof. Sarah Ssali, the meeting followed institutional input into the draft minimum standards and was aimed at validating them prior to their formal adoption by the NCHE Council at their next meeting in February 2026. The minimum standards cover nine areas namely; 1) Curriculum Design, 2) Teaching and Learning Approaches, 3) Assessment, 4) Faculty Training and Support, 5) Student Support Services, 6) Quality Assurance Systems, 7) Industry and Community Linkages, 8) Monitoring and Evaluation, and 9) Gender and Equity Mainstreaming.

Following feedback into presentations by the various leaders present, a motion to adopt the draft minimum standards, with institutional input incorporated, was moved by Bugema University, seconded by UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and unanimously supported by institutions present.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Prof. Sarah Ssali appreciated NCHE for choosing Makerere to host the landmark event, reiterating that the University greatly respects each and every Higher Education Institution and regards them as partners and collaborators in the quest to improve Ugandaās Higher Education sector.

The Executive Director NCHE, Prof. Mary Okwakol reassured leaders present that all the pertinent issues raised for input into the draft minimum standards would be incorporated, and urged those with pressing issues to submit them before monthās end. She reiterated NCHEās readiness to continue lobbying Government for the resources required by Higher Education Institutions, particularly Public Universities, to implement Competence-Based Education (CBE).
Kampala, Uganda ā 20th January 2026 – Makerere University has postponed its opening date for Semester Two of Academic Year 2025/2026 from the earlier communicated 24th January 2026 to 10th February 2026.
This adjustment is in response to the Ministry of Education and Sports directive to all Schools and Education Institutions to postpone re-opening until 10th February 2026. Consequently, Semester Two at Makerere University will now run from 10th February 2026 until 6th June 2026. Attached is the detailed Calendar for Semester Two 2025/2026.
Confirmed dates for the 76th Graduation Ceremony
Makerere University also wishes to inform the general public that Makerereās 76th Graduation Ceremony will be held from Tuesday 24th February 2026 to Friday 27th February 2026.
Specifics including the graduation schedules and standard operating procedures for participants will be communicated officially in due course.
