Higher Education Resource Services, East Africa (HERS-EA) ACADEMY provides an intensive leadership and management development curriculum which equips women with skills needed to advance their personal career development and successfully navigate the institutional environment where they operate. The goal of the HERS-EA training is to raise the proportion of women in leadership and management positions in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Eastern Africa (Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Uganda).
The program is focused on managing and leading change, human resource development and institutional effectiveness. The ACADEMY prepares every participant to strengthen and expand her leadership skills by working closely with HERS-EA resource persons and staff. Participants will find the ACADEMY to be a safe environment to share confidential matters.
Following five previous successful Academies, the Sixth HERS-EA ACADEMY will be offered in a one-week blended (virtual and in-person) format (July 3rd-7th 2023).
Theme: “‘AND STILL I RISE’: ENABLING YOU TO RISE ABOVE AND BEYOND INSTITUTIONAL AND PERSONAL BARRIERS TO WOMEN LEADERSHIP.”
1. Who Should Attend?
HERS-EA welcomes aspiring dynamic leaders from diverse backgrounds to attend the ACADEMY, to share and learn from multiple institutional perspectives. There will be guidance from women with a wealth of experience in higher education, national academic organizations, government and non- governmental organizations. Participants are expected hold mid to senior-level positions and bring expertise from all parts of a college or university. They also represent a range of national groups, ages and years of experience in higher education and other fields.

3. Applying to the ACADEMY:
All applicants should download and fill the Registration Form (available at www.HERSEA.org) and return by Thursday June 1, 2023.
A complete application includes:
a) A brief 1-page CV (focus on employment history, responsibilities and achievements)
b) Passport size photograph
c) A brief description of developmental project you expect to initiate at your campus or workplace (maximum 200 words, see samples)
d)
i) Pay registration fee of USD 150 or UGX 600,000. Early bird discount applies up to April 30, 2023 as follows: Registration by March 31, 2023 will be 90% off, by April 30, 2023 will be 70% off.
ii) For residential participants early bird discount does not apply, Pay USD 1,000 or UGX 3,500,000.

Makerere University and DFCU Bank have today signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster innovation, student leadership, research and community impact initiatives.
The collaboration which will see the equipping of the Disability Support center for students living with disabilities through the MAK run and more leadership trainings for students will begin this July.
“The MoU will strengthen research collaborations across sectors like agriculture and health and it will also support the Mutebile Centre to assist private sector growth, which is crucial in lifting Africa out of poverty,” said Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Charles M. Mudiwa, the DFCU Bank Chief Executive Officer, welcomed the move, noting its alignment with the bank’s mission to transform lives and support national development through four pillars: funding, financial inclusion, enterprise development, and vocational education.
“This MoU crowns years of effort and shared intent between our institutions,” he stated. Mr. Mudiwa highlighted the bank’s commitment to skilling youth through internships, curriculum development, and support for innovation hubs and centres of excellence at the university. “We consume the graduates of Makerere. In our most recent graduate intake of 87, 60% were Makerere alumni. The bank allocates around 30 internship positions annually to equip young people with the skills necessary for future roles within the institution,” Mr. Mudiwa, noted.
Representing the student body, Guild President His Excellency, Sentamu Churchill James, commended the partnership as a timely intervention that will empower youth, support SMEs, and expand internship and leadership development opportunities.
