Mak-RIF Call for Expression of Interest: Capacity Building for Research Management Work for CAES & CoVAB Staff. Deadline 6:00 PM EAT on 22nd March 2022.
Makerere University received funding from the Government of the Republic of Uganda, through Makerere University’s Research and Innovation Fund (Mak-RIF) to support high-impact Research and Innovations. The goal of this fund is to increase the local generation of translatable research and scalable innovations that address key gaps required to drive Uganda’s development agenda, especially the un-funded priorities. Objective three of the fund is to support the growth of research leadership capacity in the university
Capacity building is a continuous process and in a bid to further build the capacity of researchers in the various colleges of Makerere University, Mak-RIF is organizing Research Management training sessions for at least 20 members of each of the different Colleges. Thirdly College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources, and Bio-Security (CoVAB). The research management training sessions are aimed at enhancing the research skills of faculty, students and non-teaching staff and therefore improving the quality and quantity of research output within the University with spillover effects to other intuitions and organizations too. Focus will be on three core topics; Grant and proposal writing, Grant management and Effective communication which are fundamental in research execution. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of participation.
Criteria
Participants should be members of CAES and CoVABS.
Participants need to express interest in two or more of the topics of focus.
Participants should be Makerere University staff (academic and administrative).
Participants should be available to physically attend all the selected training sessions
This training will be conducted starting on Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24th and Friday 25th 2022 between 8:30 am and 1:30 pm East African Time at the Center for Biosecurity and Global Health at CoVAB.
Mak-RIF therefore invites interested members of CAES and CoVAB to express interest by submitting an application using this form before 6:00 PM EAT on March 22, 2022.

Makerere University and DFCU Bank have today signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster innovation, student leadership, research and community impact initiatives.
The collaboration which will see the equipping of the Disability Support center for students living with disabilities through the MAK run and more leadership trainings for students will begin this July.
“The MoU will strengthen research collaborations across sectors like agriculture and health and it will also support the Mutebile Centre to assist private sector growth, which is crucial in lifting Africa out of poverty,” said Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Charles M. Mudiwa, the DFCU Bank Chief Executive Officer, welcomed the move, noting its alignment with the bank’s mission to transform lives and support national development through four pillars: funding, financial inclusion, enterprise development, and vocational education.
“This MoU crowns years of effort and shared intent between our institutions,” he stated. Mr. Mudiwa highlighted the bank’s commitment to skilling youth through internships, curriculum development, and support for innovation hubs and centres of excellence at the university. “We consume the graduates of Makerere. In our most recent graduate intake of 87, 60% were Makerere alumni. The bank allocates around 30 internship positions annually to equip young people with the skills necessary for future roles within the institution,” Mr. Mudiwa, noted.
Representing the student body, Guild President His Excellency, Sentamu Churchill James, commended the partnership as a timely intervention that will empower youth, support SMEs, and expand internship and leadership development opportunities.
