Mak to Host 3rd World University Netball Championships 2018

The Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) in conjunction with Makerere University and the support of several stakeholders has won the bid to host the 3rd World University Netball Championships 2018. Uganda was awarded the hosting rights for the event scheduled to take place from 17th to 21st September 2018, beating Namibia, England and Jamaica. The award was based on among other things, the successful hosting of the; 5th All Africa Games in 2008, 2nd World University Woodball Championship 2010 and 19th World University Cross Country Championship 2014 among others.

The bidding was initiated by the Sports and Games Union during the Student committee to council meeting, during which the Union proposed that Makerere University hosts the 2018 World University Netball Championships. The proposal was fully embraced and received the blessing of the University Council.

A Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 3rd World University Netball Championships 2018 was initiated on Tuesday 13th June 2017. Commenting on the successful bid, the LOC President and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration)-Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said, “Together with Members of the LOC, we are committed to ensuring that the event is run professionally, and that Makerere University gets an international indoor facility to host the Championship.”

The successful bid was received with great joy by the Sports and Recreation Department at Makerere University. “Hosting such a world-class championship does not just elevate Uganda, which successfully participated at the Netball World Cup finishing in the top 8, but also gives coverage to the government of Uganda’s efforts to promote education and sports” enthused the Head, Ms. Peninah Kabenge.
