The Chairperson of Makerere University Convocation-Dr. Odoi-Tanga has unveiled the fundraising drive for the Makerere University Perimeter Wall construction project under the theme: “Security for Mak-Students and Staff First”.

Launched by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda together with the Makerere University Chancellor Prof. Ezra Suruma on the first day of the 67th Graduation Ceremony, the drive is aimed at raising a substantial amount of money that will facilitate the construction of a wall around Makerere Main Campus. The construction will also entail renovation of the Eastern and Western gates of the university.

Speaking to the overjoyed graduands and parents on 21st February 2017 in the Freedom Square, Dr. Odoi-Tanga said that once built; the Perimeter wall will boost security at campus by designating well-secured points of entry and exit at strategic locations.

“We know very well that Makerere University campus is traditionally a place of freedom and enlightenment for all who admire it. However, it is increasingly becoming unsafe to those who pride in it as a sanctuary of knowledge due to increasing bad elements. The university today is very porous with many entry and exist points that make the university vulnerable to security threats,” he said.

He therefore called upon all stakeholders, alumni, and well wishers of Makerere University to take pride in this project and contribute towards its successful completion. “We request you to support this project with any contribution you can make. You can make your contribution today or at any of our upcoming fundraising functions. Let us be part of this positive cause as we build for the future,” he said.

According to Dr. Odoi-Tanga, the project will be spearheaded by an independent Fundraising Board overseen by the Patron of Makerere University Convocation and Chancellor of Makerere University Prof. Ezra Suruma.
