On 18th August 2014, thousands of freshers joining Makerere University gathered in the Freedom Square for a staff-freshers meeting. The meeting aimed at introducing the new students to some of the key facilities as well as other important aspects of life at the University.
Organized by the Office of the Academic Registrar, the staff-freshers meeting is part of the activities done during the Orientation Week arranged annually to help students acquaint themselves with the great institution.

“We have so many activities going on at this institution, which include; sports, research and innovations, and religious activities. So many students have greatly benefited from these activities and I therefore implore you to fully utilize them,” he said.
According to the Academic Registrar Mr. Alfred Masikye-Namoah, the role of the University is to accord the basic possible tools and resources to help the student succeed. However the students are expected to work hard, be conscientious and accept responsibility for their own learning and progress.
“We want you to extract as much knowledge and skills as you can from your programme and social networks, so that as you leave the gates of Makerere University, you are well prepared and motivated to achieve real success in your chosen career,” the Academic Registrar said.
Students were also warned against conmen, fortune tellers, and engaging in unlawful activities and criminal acts. According to ASP Mucunguzi Jackson, students should carefully read the rules and regulations, to avoid being culprits. “Security begins with you, be the police first before a policeman comes to your help,” said the Chief Security Officer.
The Makerere Guild President, H.E. Bwowe Ivan advised students to generously contribute to the enhancement of the University’s pedigree, and jealously guard its revered reputation.
“And this can be through ardent adherence to your academic demands and responding in earnest to any University activities that may require your participation from time to time,” the Guild President said.
