The first cohort of students under the ‘Innovative Doctoral Education for Global Food Security’ Project successfully completed their training in Library and other skills at Makerere University. The group was treated to a farewell dinner at the Lawns in Kampala on 27th June 2014, with participants from the Sweden, three African Satellite Universities and Makerere University.
Speaking at the event the Director of the Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, Prof. Mukadasi Buyinza, was grateful for the partnership, which he described as a worthwhile venture in advancing graduate studies and enhancing skills across the continent.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor in Charge of Academic Affairs, Dr. Ernest Okello Ogwang who was the Chief Guest commended the innovation. “Library is the engine of the University. By training key resource persons in Library and other skills, you are securing the sustainability of quality work for many generations to come,” he said.
The participants were also treated to a captivating performance from the Swedish team as they sang merrily and danced to a Swedish traditional song in commemoration of the longest day of the Year. On behalf of the participants, Ms. Rebecca from Malawi thanked the facilitators. "You have built our lives throughout this three-week course. The knowledge and skills we have gained today, will not only help us in our professions, but in our lives as well," she said amidst applause.
Innovative Doctoral Education for Global Food Security is a joint project between the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Makerere University focused on development and performance of courses for doctoral students and workshops for senior staff.
Under this project SLU and Makerere University jointly develop and perform courses and workshops for up to 40 participants from Makerere, SLU, Nigeria, Tanzania, Rwanda and Malawi.
