Mak Tribute to the Late Professor Hayman Russel Botman

Published

on

Makerere University joins the South African Community and Academia the world over in mourning the passing of the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University – and great leader of integrity, the late Professor Hayman Russel Botman.

The Makerere University community will fondly miss Prof. Botman for his visionary role in initiating Hope@Africa; a collaboration between seven leading African universities, and Hope International; a collaboration between Stellenbosch University and four Swedish universities. Hope@Africa painted a vivid picture of how Makerere as an institution currently undergoing change could align her vision and mission to key themes in order to have a greater impact on human, social, economic and technological development in Uganda and Africa.

When it came to our attention that as a 90-year-old institution Change and Reform was imminent, we diligently sought to learn from institutions that had successfully re-engineered their structures and operations. We thank God that Stellenbosch University was one of them and our visit from 16th to 21st March 2014 indeed validated our choice. Professor Botman’s leadership demonstrated how the initiatives put in place by Stellenbosch University were promoting human development and tackling major societal challenges in Africa and in the rest of the world.

This open invitation to benchmark and successive inclusion into the Hope@Africa Project was the boost we needed to further broaden our knowledge on the resource mobilization and management function and we remain forever grateful to Prof. Botman and Stellenbosch University.

We thank God for the wonderful gift of Professor Botman’s life and leadership. May The Good Lord comfort you his family, friends and colleagues during this forlorn moment.
