On 9th September 2013, the freshmen and women of Academic Year 2013/2014 intake were oriented into the Makerere University culture at a highly attended session in the Freedom Square. The event is part of the annual initiation process of new students at Makerere University, during which they are advised on a wide range of issues to maximize their stay at Makerere University. The event is organized by the Department of the Academic Registrar.
In his remarks to the fresh men/women, the Academic Registrar, Alfred Namoah, congratulated the students for joining the prestigious Makerere University and encouraged them to make all the necessary inquiries on academic related issues within the College structures. “All academic activities are centralized around the Colleges and the School of Law. In case you have academic related issues, go to the Principal, Deputy Principal, the College Registrar or School Dean. I encourage you to pay your tuition fees now before losing it under unclear circumstances. Avoid examination malpractice and other cases of indiscipline, which could lead to your expulsion from the University,” he cautioned.
The Dean of Students, Cyriaco Kabagambe, encouraged the students to maximize their stay at Makerere University by engaging in meaningful practices. “Have gate keepers within your hearts. Be self propelling and a self starter. Nobody should force you into doing things that you do not want to. Exercise restraint in the freedom you now have as a University student and look out for things that add value to your life,” he said. He also cautioned the students against diverting their tuition monies into sports betting and other businesses around the university.
Dr. Margaret Wandera of the Makerere Health Services, encouraged the students to register with the hospital in order to access its services and also called upon the male students to embrace free circumcision at the facility. The Director, Guidance and Counseling Centre, Henry Nsubuga, advised students to seek counseling at the centre as often as the need arises. The students also received further tips from the Principal Games Tutor and a representative from the Bursar’s Office.
The meeting was attended by the Guild President, Anna Ebaju, and her cabinet. Ebaju emphasized that Makerere University was the best place for each student to realize their potential and that they should take advantage of it
