Applications are invited for equipment grants: up to a maximum of £10,000, to support health research conducted by staff or students of THRiVE institutions in Africa (i.e. Gulu University, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College, Makerere University, National University of Rwanda, National Institute of Medical Research – Mwanza,Uganda Virus Research Institute and the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology). Preference will be given to research that is funded by THRiVE PhD and Post-doctoral grants.
Application Requirements
Applications should specify the research objective to which the equipment will contribute, the justification for the request (including a statement of what equipment is already available to contribute to this research), and the potential of the equipment to contribute to current and future research in the applicant’s institution.
Applications may be made for equipment, including computer software, but not vehicles (e.g. cars and motorbikes), reagents or consumables. Applications should be made by email to the THRiVE Secretariat in Uganda ( info@thrive.or.ug , +256 414 530021) and should be no more than 500 words plus a budget and brief budget justification. Procurement of any supplies or equipment should follow the member institutions best practice.

Selection of Applications:
Applications will be reviewed by a panel of 3 members selected by the THRiVE Education and Small Grants Committee, who will not be members of the applicant’s institution.
Applications will be assessed on a simple points system with 20 being the maximum score:
- The importance/relevance of the research topic (1-5)
- The importance/relevance of the equipment in reaching the stated objective (1-5)
- The contribution the equipment requested could make to current and/or future research (1-5)
- Clarity and general quality of the application (1-5)
Successful applicants will be informed within 30 days of the closing date. Grants will be managed by the THRiVE Coordinator in each successful applicant’s institution.
Note: A progress report will be required from successful applicants one year after the grant has been awarded.
