Since the inception of the clinical care programme for persons living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs) at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in October 2004, the Institute has innovatively responded to the high demand for HIV treatment.

These innovations have enabled IDI to provide HIV care services to over 17,000 PHAs representing almost 5% of national HIV care burden. Services are provided at both the IDI Clinic in Mulago and through the IDI-KCC Capacity Building Collaboration.

In his presentation during the Vice-Chancellor's 9th Media Brieifing, Dr. Alex Coutinho highlighted some of the contributions of the IDI-KCC Collaboration as

  • HIV/AIDS care capacity established at 6 Health centers
  • 5,000 active clients in care
  • 2,500 active clients on antiretroviral therapy
