Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has finalized plans to expand Makerere Hill Road, which runs from Wandegeya to Sir Apollo Kagwa Road. The contract for the works, which will be executed using a World Bank loan, has already been signed by KCCA. The works are expected to start this month and will last a period of six months.
According to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Finance and Administration, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, “Makerere University will be compensated for a section of its land that will be taken up by the expanded road. The value will be determined by the relevant Government Officials in consultation with the University Management.”
“Measures have been taken to ensure minimum impact on the environment during and after the road works. In particular, measures will be taken to minimize noise and dust pollution near the School of Law and Makerere College School,” he adds.
The Director Estates, Fred Nuwagaba, says the intention of this expansion is to create double lanes. “The contractor will construct another lane to decongest that part of the city, including the section around the main entrance to Makerere University. A stretch of 1.7 acres will be taken up on the Makerere side. The contractor will ensure that there is minimum noise interference by hoarding to fence off the noise,” he explains.
Prof. Nawangwe points out that the expansion of the road will create some inconveniences to the road users during construction. But upon completion, the modernized road will make movement on that road much easier and improve the aesthetics of Makerere University along Makerere Hill Road.
He says updates regarding this project will be availed to the University Community on a regular basis.
