There is no value one can attach to the contribution that Tullow Oil gave to the geology students in an inspirational talk at the Makerere University Geology Department on 29th April, 2010. Ian Claude who led the Tullow Oil team delivered the talk that left the students thirsty for adventure and challenge!
Under the theme “The Opportunities of a Geologist student in the Petroleum Industry” Ian highlighted many of Tullow Oil’s activities such as the discovery and exploration drilling of more than twenty five wells of hydrocarbon.
“The department just started the Petroleum geosciences and production programme this academic year and as a programme which is dealing with petroleum exploration studies, we partnered with the Petroleum Exploration and Production Department of Uganda hence the beginning of the department’s relationship with Tullow Oil.” The Head of Department of Geology, Dr. John V. Tiberindwa said.
In a bid to help the department to know how to run the new programme, the department partnered with Tullow Oil. Though the relationship with Tullow is still informal, the Head of department hopes that the relationship will be elevated to higher level in terms of sponsorship of equipment, lectures and various inspiring conferences for the students.
The growing relationship between Tullow Oil and Makerere University’s Department of Geology was also initially inspired by the taking up of two intern students by Tullow last year in the recess term. Allan Kajubi (Year III) and Godwin Matovu (Year III) experienced a life changing opportunity with Tullow as they put to reality the theory that they are being taught.
In future, it is hoped that Tullow Oil will diversify and also forge partnerships with other institutes such as the Makerere University Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (MUIENR), Civil and Mechanical Engineering Departments of the Faculty of Technology, Makerere University.
