World veterinary Day was first celebrated by the World Veterinary Association in 2001 and is celebrated annually on the last Saturday of April. The Theme for the year 2010: ‘One world, One Health: more cooperation between veterinarians and physicians’.
The much publicised concept ‘One World, One health’ indicates that the world has awakened to the link between animal disease and public health.
Over 60% of infectious diseases are common to animals and humans. Up to 75% of emerging human diseases are of animal origin. Up to 85% of pathogens with potential for use in bioterrorism are zoonotic (infect both animals and humans).
Veterinarians and human physicians hence, need to work in concert to confront the common challenge of combating infectious disease at training, policy and operations levels.
The faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Makerere University, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry & Fisheries and the Uganda Veterinary Association have organised a series of week-long activities culminating in to celebration of the World Vet Day on 24 April, 2010. One such activity is the public lecture scheduled for Thursday 22nd April, 2010, starting at 2:00pm in the Media Room, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The national celebration will be presided over by the Hon. Minister of agriculture in Rakai District.
