After what appears a long time, academic staff and researchers at Makerere are now able to receive timely information about available funds to support research in any field at their fingertips. This has been made possible through subscription to a now functional Research database called 'Research Africa'.The Database was launched yesterday on Tuesday Nov 2, 2010 by the Acting DVC Academic Affairs, Prof. Samuel Kyamanywa in the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, after a presentation by the Research Africa Staff based in South Africa to Deputy Deans in charge of Research and other academic staff from various university units.

Research Africa provides Universities in Africa with the most comprehensive on-line system of funding opportunities to support research geared at solving problems facing the African people. The database can accessed on the following link:
<http://www.research-africa.net>

When on Campus, you can view the database by clicking the 'Campus Access' link. Alternatively, you can register online through the 'Self Registration' icon. This can only happen when you are on-campus. Once registered, you are able to access the database using your login details even off campus. Please try it out.

You will find funding sources for the following:
1. Scholarships – PhD and Masters studies
2. Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
3. Research funds for projects
4. Collaborative Research funding for large programs
5. Funding for Travel to conferences
6. Funding to publish -Books and Journal Articles

The Research Office will train Deputy Deans in charge of Research at the units who will then assist their constituents to use the Database. You can also walk into the Research office at B5 Lincoln Flats and you will be assisted to run through the system.

“Again, I urge all of us to use this opportunity to access a myriad of funding out there,” counseled Associate Professor George Nasinyama, Deputy Director (Research & Publications)-School of Graduate Studies.
