Flagging Off Surgical Masks to Xiangtan University

Published

on

I have had the pleasure to flag-off 4,000 pieces of surgical masks donated by the Makerere University community to Xiangtan University, our main collaborating university in China where more than 60 Ugandans mostly from Makerere University are studying. ‬

Makerere University is very concerned with the devastation that the Coronavirus has caused and we have already sent our solidarity message to the people of the People’s Republic of China and Xiangtan University in particular, with whom we collaborate under the Confucius Institute. As a further show of solidarity, we want to send this token of support to Xiangtan University, which we hope will help to further fight against this virus. Our ultimate hope is that the virus will be defeated very soon. We are confident with the measures that have been taken by the Chinese Government so far.

Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and Dr. Gilbert Gomoshabe (2nd Right) with the Confucius Institute at Makerere University Team during the flagging off ceremony on 24th February 2020.

I want to send our message of solidarity to President Li Bochao and all the student and staff of Xiangtan University and through them, to the people of China. We are in solidarity with you and we wish you success in the fight against the Coronavirus.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nawangwe, the Head of Grants Administration and Management Unit (GAMSU), Prof. Sylvia Tamusuza Nakimera Nnanyonga along side other officials at the launch

This afternoon I have launched the Makerere University Grants Administration Professionals (MakGAP) after a four-day intensive training conducted by experts from Makerere University and Northwestern University, USA. With a portfolio of more than 100 new grants registered every month, Makerere University needs to have a critical mass of grants administration professionals to manage this huge research grants portfolio. I thank the Grants Administration and Management Unit (GAMSU), led by Prof. Sylvia Tamusuza Nakimera Nnanyonga for conducting the training.

The late former Vice Chancellor 2004 to 2009 Prof. Luboobi Livingstone.

I have received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Professor Livingstone Luboobi, former Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. A distinguished Professor of Mathematics, Professor Luboobi served as Vice Chancellor from 2004 to 2009, guiding the university through a critical period of transformation and growth. His contributions to academia and leadership at Makerere will be remembered with great respect and admiration. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
