Hosted by the Dubai Design District (d3), the Global Grad Show is a not for profit initiative curated by renowned author and designer, Brendan McGetrick. McGetrick curated 200 innovative from over 470 global entries based on his personal interpretation of design that emphasises four categories: innovation that transcends technology and exists independent of wealth; equality without hierarchy amongst universities, regions and designers; universal design opens to all types of projects; and impact on the world at large through solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.
The BVKit is a self-test diagnosis tool that detects vaginal infections designed by Ms. Margaret Nanyombi; a Bachelor of Information Technology student set to graduate in January 2018 and Mr. Douglas Were; a Bachelor of Computer Science graduate from Makerere University. The BVKit seeks to address limited and distant options faced by women in accessing quality reproductive health, and will be available as a private, reusable and one-time purchase that provides instant diagnosis and results.
“The mobile application that is used with the kit will be free to download and use, which should encourage the women to acquire one and be able to test their vaginal health regularly to ensure they remain healthy,” wrote Ms. Nanyombi in the team’s application that was eventually selected.
Margaret and Douglas will join 199 other teams from the world's leading design and technology universities drawn from 43 countries at the third edition of the acclaimed annual Global Grad Show to be held during the Dubai Design Week from 14-18 November, 2017. Dubai Design Week is one of the world’s newest and most ambitious international design events, conceived to shine a spotlight on Dubai as a leading design hub, and share the UAE’s thriving design scene with the world at large. Established in 2015, it is owned and managed by the Art Dubai Group and is held under the dedicated patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.
Makerere University congratulates Margaret and Douglas upon being selected to participate in the 2017 Global Grad Show Exhibition and wishes BVKit success in being selected as wining prototype to be awarded the inaugural Progress Prize.
