Makerere University wishes to congratulate Dr. Peter Wasswa upon winning a grant worth USD 500,000 from PEARLS, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Dr. Wasswa is a Lecturer of Agricultural Production in the School of Agricultural Sciences, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES).
On 15th April 2013 BMGF sent out a request for proposals through The Program for Emerging Agricultural Research Leaders (PEARLS). The project sought proposals for agricultural research with the potential to increase the sustainable productivity of smallholder farmers in developing countries.
PEARL supports projects led by MSc. and PhD Scientists at national Agricultural Research Institutions and Universities in Sub-saharan Africa, working in collaboration with other researchers internationally.
In response to the announcement, the Director Research and Graduate Training (DRGT) Prof. Mukadasi Buyiza said, "We congratulate Peter upon this excellent
beginning and DRGT is happy to provide him with the institutional support that he might require in the course of implementating this project."
Prof. Buyinza further encouraged academic staff to keep up with the good work of writing fundable proposals so as to attract more funding for research activities at the University.
