President Yoweri Museveni launched the Great Lakes Students’ Union (GLSU) at Makerere University on 12th July 2013; with a call to the youth to look at society from a global perspective. The Head of State decried the traditional arrangement of society into tribes and clans, arguing that Africa has only four language groups as opposed to the misrepresentation that the continent is divided into many tribes. He described these groups as the Niger-Congo group; the Nilo-Sahara group; the Afro-Asiatic group and the Bushmen.
“The Youth in Africa are in a crisis. There are so many things pulling you. You will be lost if you do not find your socio-political campus. Many of the African leaders were young at the time of independence. They failed partly because they did not embrace integration,” he said.
His Excellency was grateful to the strides made towards economic integration in the East African community, adding that efforts towards political integration were in high gear.
The GLSU comprises of student leaders from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Southern Sudan. One of the GLSU leaders, David Lewis, emphasized that the Youth are keen to embrace regional integration as a mighty weapon at their disposal.
Prof. JYT Mugisha, who spoke on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, thanked the students for this initiative, adding that Makerere University will always be available for more of their activities. Similar conventions will be held on a rotational basis in the various participating countries.
