The Nile Basin Research Programme (NBRP), a research component of the Nile Basin Initiative, is a strategic, multidisciplinary programme for research and education on topics related to the Nile Basin. It contributes to the generation of an evidence based knowledge bank to inform the the process of signing the Nile water sharing pact and the Nile commission.
The Nile Basin Research Programme (NBRP), a research component of the Nile Basin Initiative, is a strategic, multidisciplinary programme for research and education on topics related to the Nile Basin. It contributes to the generation of an evidence based knowledge bank to inform the the process of signing the Nile water sharing pact and the Nile commission.
Funded by the Norwegian government and supported by all the ten governments in the Nile basin region, the programme has supported individual and joint research, joint development of research projects, and establishment of the Nile basin research groups, dissemination of knowledge and research results through seminars, workshops, international conferences and publications. The programme, which aims to promote regional confidence through competence building and networking across the region has for the last four years, focused on thematic areas on water contested resources, climate dynamics, health and socio-economic aspects and has produced several outputs including the global award winner ‘the journey of water’ as best documentary on water and the Nile. Targeting post-doctoral and senior researchers, NBRP has brought together researchers from different countries, enhanced exchange and interaction, stimulated work and cooperation in different environments by supporting research networks and partnerships and sustaining activities and new initiatives in the area of water for the last four years.
Marking the World Water Day on the 22nd March 2010, NBRP will launch its most recent set of publications on several critical issues including conflict and co-operation among the ten Nile basin countries. With ambassadors from the ten Nile region countries present, the two hour afternoon launch programme will include both educative and festive moments and free book copies will be given. The titles to be launched include:
1. Water, Culture and Identity: Comparing past and present traditions in the Nile Basin Region (edited Volume)
2. The River Nile in the post-colonial age: Conflict and Co-operation among the Nile Basin Countries (edited volume)
3. The Neolithic of the middle Nile Region (monograph)
This launch will take place on 9th April 2010, at Makerere University Main Hall from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, after the World Water day celebrations on 22nd March 2010. Come lets celebrate partnership and networking across the region.
