HFG Young African Scholars Sponsorship 2015

THE HARRY FRANK GUGGENHEIM FOUNDATION is an American private foundation which supports research on problems related to violence and aggression.  We conduct a special program for young African Scholars, aged 35 or younger, who have been educated and are living on the continent. This includes a methods workshop, to be held this spring in Nairobi, fieldwork research grants of $2000 each, editorial and publication help, and sponsorship at an international conference in 2016 to present the findings.

Applications should be no more than six pages and include The Research Question, a short Review of Literature, and a description of Research Methods to be used. A 2 page c.v. should also be attached.  In addition, a scan of your passport or id card should be included as proof of age.

Applications are due by December 15 for the class commencing in Spring 2015

Call for Applications: Admission to Postgraduate Programmes 2025/2026

Mak CoBAMS Graduands jubilate on the third session of the 72nd Graduation held on 25th May 2022.

The Academic Registrar, Makerere University invites applications for admission to Graduate Programmes (Postgraduate Diplomas,  Masters and Doctoral Degree Programmes) for the 2025/2026 Academic Year. Applicants should have obtained at least a first or second class degree (or its equivalent) from a Chartered University at the time of completion. Applicants should also possess a Uganda Certificate of Education (or its equivalent) and a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (or its equivalent).

Sponsorship:

All Graduate Programmes are PRIVATELY-SPONSORED. Therefore applicants seeking sponsorship should have their applications endorsed by their respective sponsors where applicable.  Applicants should note that the various fees payable to the University indicated for the various programmes EXCLUDE functional fees, accommodation, books, research and other expenses.  

How to submit your application:

  1. Visit the Makerere University’s Admissions URL https://apply.mak.ac.ug
  1. Sign up using full name, e-mail and Mobile No.  Please note that your name must be similar to the one on your supporting academic documents for your application to be considered valid. 
  1. A password will be sent to both your e-mail and mobile number.
  1. The system will prompt you to change the password to the one you can easily remember.
  1. To fill a form (all form sections must be filled) the applicant clicks on the APPLY NOW button (for first time applicants) or MY PORTAL button (for renewal of application)  displayed on the appropriate scheme i.e. Taught PhDs, Masters & Postgrad Diplomas OR PhD by Research.
  1. All academic transcripts/certificates and passport photos should be scanned and uploaded on the system.
  1. You can access the referees’ letter by following the following link: https://news.mak.ac.ug/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Makerere-Referee-Form-Graduate-Programmes.pdf. These should be filled, scanned and uploaded.
  1. Obtain a payment reference number [PRN] by clicking on “Pay for Form” button
  1. Make the following payments at any of the banks used by URA
  2. Application fee = Ugx 50,000 (East African applicants) or  Ugx 151,500 (International Applicants)

For INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS, application fees can be transferred either by EFT or any other means in UGX to a designated URA collection account in Bank of Uganda as follows:

    1. All Applicants for Master of Business Administration (College of Business and Management Sciences and Makerere University Business School) will do a GMAT test on dates to be communicated by College of Business and Management Sciences and Makerere University Business School respectively.
    1. All Applicants for Master of Clinical Psychology, Master of Counselling Psychology, Master of Organisational Psychology and Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology will be invited for an interview before admission can be made on dates to be communicated by College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

    Mature Age Aptitude Exam Results for 2025/2026 AY

    The Office of Academic Registrar, Makerere University has released results for the Mature Age Entry Scheme Examinations held on Saturday 14th December, 2024.

    The Candidates who scored 50% and above in the aptitude test passed the aptitude examination and will have their programme -specific examination paper marked. Those who scored less than 50% failed.

    Prof. Nawangwe receives African Leadership and Lifetime Achievement Awards

    Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has been honored with the African Leadership Magazine Person of the Year Award 2024 for his exceptional leadership in education. The prestigious award was presented to him at a grand ceremony held at the Marriott Casablanca Hotel in Morocco, by H.E. Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania and Chairman of the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Board. The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, H.E. Andry Rajoelina, President of Madagascar.

    In addition to this accolade, Prof. Nawangwe received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the South Carolina House of Representatives in recognition of his remarkable contributions to education and leadership in Africa. The award, introduced by Representative Henderson-Myers and the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, celebrates his outstanding achievements as an educator and his pivotal role in transforming Makerere University into a research-intensive, globally competitive institution.

    According to the House Resolution, Prof. Nawangwe has served as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University since August 2017, leading the institution through a significant transformation into a hub for research and technological advancement. Under his leadership, Makerere has strengthened partnerships with global institutions, driven investments in research and infrastructure development, and championed policy reforms aimed at addressing Africa’s developmental challenges. Notably, he played a key role in the establishment of Kiira Motors Corporation, Africa’s first electric vehicle manufacturing company, in which Makerere holds a 4% stake​.

    Prof. Nawangwe also serves in leadership capacities on several international academic boards, including as Chair of the Alliance for African Partnerships, Vice Chair of the Australia Africa Universities Network, and Council Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. His visionary leadership continues to shape the future of African academia, earning him recognition as one of the continent’s foremost education reformers.
