Welcome to the July edition of Synthesis, featuring the latest news, events and funding opportunities from the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).

Highlights

  • ACU joins forces with UN-Habitat to tackle rapid urbanisation and climate change
    • The ACU and other members of the Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Initiative have signed an agreement with UN-Habitat to help tackle the urgent issues raised by rapid urbanisation.
  • ACU Summer School starts this week
    • 40 students from ACU member universities have now arrived in South Africa at Stellenbosch University, our hosts for this year’s ACU Summer School.
  • Next issue of The ACU Review launching soon
    • The ACU Review celebrates the extraordinary work of member universities across the Commonwealth. This issue explores how the humanities are helping to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • June events with our members
    • Uni20 Conference: Uni20 explored the role of universities in the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The conference highlighted higher education’s ability to encourage mutual understanding, and explored why it’s essential to build collaborative networks and partnerships.
    • Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan African University Forum: The dedication and excellence of ACU members was acknowledged in the recent THE rankings. ACU members made up seven of the top 10 universities in the region, including the number one spot.
  • Upcoming events
    • ACU Canada Symposium 2023: VCs and other senior higher education stakeholders will come together to share experiences, ideas, and debate around how universities are tackling inequity, the distinct and shared challenges they face, and how international collaboration can support their efforts.
  • Grants and funding opportunities
    • Tackle sexual harassment: apply for a Martha Farrell Fellowship – Fellows will receive access to the training programme and follow-up support from the Martha Farrell Foundation. In addition, each fellow will receive a grant of GBP 1,000 to support their project.
    • PhD opportunity: further your Commonwealth-related research – The Routledge/Round Table Commonwealth Studentships provide support for research projects on Commonwealth-related themes. Two studentships are available each year of up to GBP 5,500 each.

Special University Entry Examinations for the Diploma in Performing Arts 2026/27

Students from the Department of Performing Arts on 4th April 2025.

The Academic Registrar Makerere University invites applications for the Special University Entry Examinations for admission to the Diploma in Performing Arts.

The examination will take place on Saturday 16th May, 2026.

Application process is online for those intending to sit the examination. Kindly note that there is payment of a non-refundable application fee of Shs. 110,000/- excluding bank charges in any (Stanbic Bank, Dfcu Post Bank, UBA and Centenary Bank). After filling the online application, you will be provided with 2 Past Papers.

To be eligible to sit the examinations, the candidate must possess an O’ Level Certificate (UCE) with at least 5 Passes.

The deadline for receiving the online applications is Tuesday 12th May 2026.

How to Apply

  • Application is online for ALL applicants.
  • Other relevant information can be obtained from Undergraduate Mature Age Office, Level 5, Room 505, Senate Building, Makerere University or can be accessed from https://see.mak.ac.ug
  • A non refundable application fee of Shs. 110,000= for Ugandans, East Africans Applicants (Including S. Sudan & DRC) OR US $ 75 or equivalent for international applicants plus bank charges should be paid in any of the banks used by Uganda Revenue Authority.

Diploma Holders Admission Lists under Government Sponsorship for 2026/2027 AY

The Office of Academic Registrar, Makerere University has released lists of Diploma holders admitted under the Government Sponsorship Scheme for the Academic Year 2026/2027.

Under the Diploma Holders Government Sponsorship Scheme admission does not exceed 5% of the intake capacity to the respective Degree Programme.

Mature Age Examination Results for 2026/2027 Academic Year

The Office of Academic Registrar, Makerere University has released results for the Mature Age Entry Scheme Examinations held on Saturday 13th December 2025.

Candidates who scored a minimum of 50% passed and have been recommended by the Pre-Entry & Mature Age Committee to the University’s Admissions Committee for consideration.

The Aptitude Exam (Paper 1) results for the Mature Age Entry Scheme 2026/2027 can be accessed by following this link.
