DRGT Launches PhD Training in Advanced Research Methods

Published

on

Today, 20th January 2020, the Directorate of Research and Graduate Training (DRGT) has carried on with its cardinal mission of enhancing scholarship and in this regard, I officiated at the opening of the PhD training in Advanced Research Methods. The training course in Advanced Research Methods is among the required cross-cutting courses for PhD students at Makerere University, aimed at equipping them with skills and knowledge of frameworks, processes and approaches for designing a qualitative and/or quantitative doctoral research study in the natural and social sciences.

As DRGT, we know well that combining different subjects provides an exciting opportunity to find ways in which those subjects intersect and influence each other, across different subject boundaries. Therefore, we have organized a 2-week integrative, multidisciplinary training courses in Research Management.

In other words, the ability to solve complex problems ultimately relies not on extensive knowledge of a single focus area, but on the ability to apply critical thinking skills to make connections, synthesize different perspectives, and acquire new knowledge – all toward supporting the development of invaluable holistic perspectives. After all, what good is a solution if, it’s in lack of a broader context?

In giving students the freedom to roam outside the conventional constraints of a single discipline while tailoring their own degree programs to meet their academic visions, our multidisciplinary cross-cutting courses open new doors and windows for our PhD students and really tomorrow’s research leaders to devise new, comprehensive and lasting opportunities.

To the entire University Management team, I commend you on this latest success, and I look forward to seeing even more great things from you during the year 2020.
