MakRun: The Third Edition Ends Blissfully

On Sunday 15th September 2019, thousands of participants comprising staff, students, alumni, friends and well-wishers assembled in the Freedom Square for the Makerere University Endowment Fund Run (MakRun).

The Third Edition of the MakRun which  started with aerobics at 6:00 am, was flagged off by the Chief Runner, Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera at 7:00am.

The MakRun is an annual event organized by Makerere University Endowment Fund together with the Planning and Development Department. The MakRun is geared towards raising UGX15billion to construct the Makerere University Students’ Centre; a one-stop Student Information Centre with a 2,000 seater state-of-the-art Auditorium and Wall of Fame.

According to the Acting Director of Planning and Development Mr. Matia Kabuye, the Makerere University Students’ Center reflects the unwavering commitment to improving the students’ academic experience and the quality of life generated by the conducive environment while at the University.

“The Students Centre serves as a collective place that reflects dynamism of the 21st century student in the digital age. It will correct the imbalance in access to socio-cultural amenities that was created by the increase in student numbers,” he said.

Speaking at the MakRun 2019 Award Ceremony in the Freedom Square, Prof. Kagonyera applauded Makerere University for creating a platform that enables students, staff, alumni and well-wishers to collectively contribute towards Makerere University’s development. “This cause is a step in the right direction as far as attaining financial independence for Makerere University is concerned.

He congratulated Makerere University leadership upon inaugurating both Makerere University Holdings Company and Makerere University Endowment Fund Boards when he said, “in so doing, you have put in place the necessary infrastructure through which support from your gallant alumni can be channeled.”

Prof. Kagonyera commended Makerere University for providing an opportunity to the alumni, to give back to the University through the Endowment Fund initiatives. He advocated for transparency and accountability for the funds mobilized and tasked the students, staff, and alumni to make a follow up on the funds raised and the progress of the project. “This is your own initiative you should demand accountability and updates.”

He congratulated the winners of the 5Km and 10Km runs and presented medals and certificates to them amidst applause.

For the 10km race, the winning team comprised;

Male category

  • Mr. Jamona Edmond (Best Overall)
  • Mr. Ategeka Brian Adams (1st Runner Up)
  • Mr. Agaba Aggrey (2nd Runner Up)

Female category

  • Ms. Bunia Dina (Best Overall)
  • Ms. Nassasira Eva (1st Runner Up)
  • Ms. Nuwagaba Edian (2nd Runner Up)

For the 5km race, the winning team comprised;

Male category

  • Mr. Ondoka Isaac (Best Overall)
  • Mr. Otim Emmanuel (1st Runner Up)
  • Mr. Abdul Majid (2nd Runner Up)

Female category

  • Ms. Atemo Lydia (Best Overall)
  • Ms. Akello Concy (1st Runner Up)
  • Ms. Apio Gloria (2nd Runner Up)

Other winners in the Senior Category of runners included;

  • Mr. Ochieng Zekeri (Best Overall)
  • Mr. Nsubuga Saul (1st Runner Up)
  • Ms. Lunyolo Petra (2nd Runner Up)

Representing the Chairperson of Council, Assoc. Prof. Sarah Ssali applauded students, staff and alumni for the spirit of togetherness they have exhibited throughout the three MakRun editions.

The award winners, recieved bronze, silver and gold medels in addition to certificates.

The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe thanked Prof. Kagonyera for officiating the Third Edition of the MakRun.  On behalf of the University Management, Prof. Nawangwe applauded the MakRun 2019 Organizing Committee chaired by Mr. Matia Kabuye -the Acting Director, Planning and Development Department for organizing a successful Run.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe on 20th April 2026 inaugurated the Second Makerere University Health User Committee (Mak-HUC). The Committee was established by the Vice Chancellor in 2022 as part of his strategic mandate to strengthen and oversee the University Hospital services delivery.

Chaired by Dr. Allen Kabagenyi from the College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS), Mak-HUC has as its members; Prof. Josaphat K. Byamugisha-Director Makerere University Health Services (MakHS) and Dr. Daniel Ronald Ruhweza-Department of Law and Jurisprudence, School of Law.

Other members include; Dr. Arthur Kwizera-Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care, College of Health Sciences (CHS) and Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) Representative, Dr. Lillian Tukahirwa-Makerere University Administrative Staff Association (MASA) Representative, Mr. Godfrey Othieno- National Union of Educational Institutions (NUEI) Representative, and as Secretariat, Ms. Kevin M. Nabiryo-Directorate of Human Resources.

The 2nd Mak-HUC has been appointed for a period of four years effective 1st January 2026 with a mandate to: Guide, monitor and oversee delivery of health services by MakHS; Represent the interests and concerns of staff and students that use MakHS; Advise on alignment with sustainable health financing and insurance models; Strengthen systems for fraud prevention, digital transformation and access to specialized treatment, among other responsibilities.

The 1st Mak-HUC was chaired by Dr. Allen Kabagenyi and had as members; Prof. Josaphat Byamugisha, Dr. Fred Mayambala, Dr. Zahara Nampewo, Mr. Othieno Godfrey, Mr. Apunyo Paul Okiria and Ms. Ikiriza Racheal. Milestones during the first era included; Outpatient Department visits growth from 4,802 (2022) to 7,388 (Nov 2025) for staff and 14,641 (2022) to 19,069 (Nov 2025) for students.

Others milestones included; Commissioning of a fully equipped Operating Theatre, Establishment of a modern Imaging Hub, Development of a fully functional Audiology Unit, Expansion of the Temporal Bone Laboratory, Launch of the Olink Proteomics Platform and Enhancement of the Dental Unit with 32 dental chairs and experienced personnel.
