Professor Sylvia Antonia Nakimera Nannyonga-Tamusuza has been inaugurated as the third Head of the Makerere University Grants Administration and Management Support Unit (GAMSU). This is part of efforts to streamline the University’s commitment to outstanding support services and efficient management of grants. The handover ceremony, held in the GAMSU Boardroom and attended by university officials and stakeholders, marked the passing of the baton from Professor Grace Bantebya Kyomuhendo who has served as Head for a year. She now takes on a new assignment in the establishment of Bunyoro University as Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs.

The Makerere University, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration and Chair of the Grants Management Steering Committee (GMSC), Professor Henry Alinaitwe, appreciated the work done by Professor Bantebya and welcomed Professor Tamusuza, encouraging her to build on the foundation laid by her predecessor.

Professor Bantebya, who handed over with a smile, credited her time as Head for contributing to her new appointment as Deputy Vice Chancellor. She expressed pride at leaving behind a database for documenting all research grant projects at Makerere University, a structured system for the pre-award, award, and post-award phases, and a Strategic Plan for GAMSU to guide its work.

In her acceptance speech, Professor Tamusuza expressed her gratitude at being accorded the opportunity to be part of the young and instrumental unit that plays a vital role in realizing the university’s goal of becoming a research-led institution. She said she was looking forward to securing more grants, streamlining grant processes, and easing statutory reporting in the days to come.

The university’s dedication to providing exceptional support services and managing grants through GAMSU is evident in its continuous efforts to evolve and improve the unit. Makerere University remains committed to advancing research and innovation, and the appointment of Professor Tamusuza as Head of GAMSU is another step in that direction.
