DAAD-RUFORUM in-region PhD Scholarships 2014

RUFORUM Secretariat is pleased to announce that a few scholarships for PhD Plant Breeding and Biotechnology programme are available through DAAD in region programme support (CALL ID: PBB/DAAD/PHD/14). The scholarships are tenable for 2014/15 academic year at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. DAAD promotes international academic exchange as well as educational cooperation with developing countries through various funding and scholarship programmes. The aim of the in-region programme is to support RUFORUM¹s regional training programmes.

The PhD training at Makerere University starts in September 2014, and therefore, only candidates available to start the PhD training this September need to apply. Applications are invited from qualified candidates (must be MSc holders in the relevant disciplines) from outside Uganda, but from Eastern, Central and Southern Africa.  Academic staff members from Universities and women are especially encouraged to apply.

Please note that males should not be more than 35 years old, and women, 40 at the time of application. Candidates must apply for both scholarships from RUFORUM Secretariat and PhD admission from Makerere University. Candidates who have applied for PhD admission to Makerere University under the Intra ACP Academic Programme (Training Crop Scientists for Africa) need not apply again as we shall use their existing documents for consideration of their applications. However, they need to apply online for the PhD scholarships.

Application process

  1. Completed application form and 2 recommendation letters for admission to the PhD Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Programme at Makerere (application forms available www.mak.ac.ug): scanned copies of application documents are accepted)
  2. Academic transcripts (attach copies of both undergraduate and MSc certificates)
  3. Concept note, of 2-3 pages, outlining the proposed PhD research area (Background, rationale, objectives of the proposed research, proposed Methodology, and expected Results)
  4. A one page motivation letter for the PhD study

Aptitude Exam (Paper 1) Results for the Mature Age Entry Scheme 2026/2027

The Office of Academic Registrar, Makerere University has released Aptitude Test Examination results for the Mature Age Entry Scheme Examinations held on Saturday 13th December 2025.

The Candidates who scored 50% and above in the aptitude test passed the aptitude examination and will have their programme -specific examination paper marked. Those who scored less than 50% failed.

The Academic Registrar, Makerere University invites applications for admission to Graduate Programmes (Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and Doctoral Degree Programmes) for the 2026/2027 Academic Year. Applicants should have obtained at least a first or second class degree (or its equivalent) from a Chartered University at the time of completion. Applicants should also possess a Uganda Certificate of Education (or its equivalent) and a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (or its equivalent).

Sponsorship:

All Graduate Programmes are PRIVATELY-SPONSORED. Therefore, applicants seeking sponsorship should have their applications endorsed by their respective sponsors where applicable. Applicants should note that the various fees payable to the University indicated for the various programmes EXCLUDE functional fees, accommodation, books, research and other expenses.
