Pauline Mazrui traces Prof. Mazrui footsteps at Makerere

Pauline Uti Mazrui, the wife to the Late Prof. Ali Mazrui, has made her maiden visit to Makerere University in a bid to renew the commitment of taking Mazuriana projects forward. Mrs. Mazrui was in the company of Mohamed K. Mazrui- a cousin to the late Prof. Mazrui. The team was received by the Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu, members of Management and officials from the Makerere University Private Sector Forum (MUPSF).

Mrs. Mazrui was overjoyed at visiting Makerere University, describing it as a place dearest to the late Prof. Mazrui’s heart. “It’s quite an honour to see a place that built Prof. Mazrui. Uganda and Makerere University were so close to him. When you visit our house, you see his photos with Ugandan women dressed in the traditional busuti. He used to say his most productive years were at Makerere University,” she explains with nostalgia.

“We should come together as a team and see how to keep his memory alive. How do we harness the resources that we have in common to ensure that we continue building peace, tolerance and acceptance as some of the ideals he believed in,” she added. The Vice Chancellor  emphasized that Makerere University benefitted from Prof. Ali Mazrui in as much measure as he did benefit from it. He called upon Mrs. Pauline Mazrui to play a key role in taking on his legacy. “We are not looking for resources from you, but Prof. Mazrui had friends. If you can connect us to those friends, then you will have done your part in assisting Makerere University, Uganda and East Africa,” he said.

According to Nuha Mwesigwa of the MUPSF, Mrs. Pauline Mazrui is on a mission to trace and appreciate the different Universities that Prof. Mazrui worked at and also has a passion for peace building. She is scheduled to meet the Principal and members of Staff from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS).

Background

In 2009, Makerere University together with Makerere University Private Sector Forum (MUPSF) hosted Professor Ali A. Mazrui through a series of joint colorful events, the climax of which was the launch of the Ali Mazrui Chair and Scholarship Endowment and the Mazrui Centre of Global Studies (MCGS) at Makerere in his honor and to uphold his name in perpetuity. The two constituted the Makerere-Mazruiana Projects (MMP).

The Mazrui Chair at Makerere was in honor of the exemplary record of his accomplishments that began at the University in 1963. Professor Mazrui received that honor during a colorful ceremony which, was officiated by H.E Yoweri Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, represented by Professor Apolo Nsibambi, then, Prime Minister of Uganda.

The Mazrui Chair is intended to attract future scholars of exceptional distinction in the objective that any new holder would repeat Professor Mazrui’s illustrious record of the past. The Chair is intended to support nationally and internationally credentialed research professors and lecturers in teaching, research, new innovations and knowledge management and exchange plus those engaged in writing and publishing.

Professor Ali A Mazrui proposed the agenda of his Chair at Makerere to focus on African’s Triple Heritage; a subject where he had written a book, done a television series and taught classes at two universities, and lectured across continents. In his own words, the Professor remarked ‘it may be easier to promote this project as it will be focusing on the Indigenous African Civilization; Islamic civilization and Western Civilization. This qualifies it to be called; The Mazruiana Chair of Africa’s Triple Heritage’ (Ali Mazrui).

Call for Applications: Third U.S.-Africa Frontiers Symposium

The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is pleased to announce the 3rd U.S.-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium in partnership with and hosted by the Republic of Rwanda. The upcoming meeting will be held on February 18-20, 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda. The application is now open for scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from the United States and African Union member countries to submit their application online before the deadline of July 7, 2024, 11:59 PM ET (Washington D.C. time).

This program brings together outstanding early/mid-career scientists, engineers, and medical professionals (within 15 years of most recent degree), from the United States and the member countries of the African Union for a series of symposia to discuss exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. The goal of these meetings is to enhance scientific exchange and dialogue among early-to-middle career researchers in African countries and the United States, including the African science diaspora, and through this interaction facilitate research collaboration within and beyond the region. Another unique aspect of the Frontiers events is the pluri-disciplinarity of the participants’ backgrounds and research interests.

One of the main objectives of this Frontiers symposium is to advance our understanding of cutting-edge S&T trends in the U.S. and Africa and to foster dialogue and collaborations across disciplines. The upcoming symposium will address the following topics:

  • Session I: New Solutions for Decarbonization
  • Session II: Biotechnology
  • Session III: Precision Agriculture
  • Session IV: Advances in Space Research
  • Session V: Smart and Connected Cities

We encourage early-career scientists, engineers and medical professionals working on related research to apply to this multidisciplinary meeting, as long as they fulfill the eligibility criteria. Each general participant will also have the opportunity to present their research during poster sessions. Travel of selected participants will be covered. Homegrown Clean Energy Project:

Mobility for Clean Energy Solutions to promote energy independence and environmental well-being through collaboration and innovation, addressing climate challenges across Africa.

Background:

Africa, a continent brimming with potential, faces a critical challenge: ensuring energy access and tackling climate change. Over 50% of its population lacks electricity, and relying on unsustainable practices threatens their health and the environment. Yet, Africa possesses a wealth of untapped renewable resources – a golden key to unlocking a brighter future.
The Homegrown Clean Energy (HCE) Solutions Project steps in to address these challenges with a vision driven by African ingenuity. We are empowering universities, the private sector, and local communities to develop clean energy solutions tailored to their specific needs.

The objectives of Homegrown Clean Energy:

  • Promote the development of Homegrown Clean Energy (HCE) solutions for underrepresented communities.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and technology transfer among participating institutions.
  • Enhance entrepreneurship skills in clean energy solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation in Africa.

Makerere University is pleased to announce a vacancy for the position of Assistant Administrative Officer (REC Administrator) within the School of Biomedical Sciences Research Ethics Committee (MakSBSREC). This is an excellent opportunity for qualified individuals to contribute to the ethical oversight of research involving human participants.

Position Details:

  • Job Title: Assistant Administrative Officer (REC Administrator) – MakSBSREC

  • Engagement: Full-time
  • Duration: 1 Year, renewable upon satisfactory performance

Qualifications, Desired Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and Humanities, Medicine and Surgery, Ethics and Human Rights, or any related field.

  • Up-to-date training in Human Subject Protection or Good Clinical Practice.
  • Proficiency in English (both spoken and written).
