Two (2) Post-doctoral Research Fellows in Physically- Informed Probabilistic Modelling of Air Pollution, Department of Computer Science, School of Computing & Informatics Technology

An exciting opportunity for Post-doctoral Research Fellows is available at AirQo, a social impact project based in the Artificial Intelligence lab and the Department of Computer Science, College of Computing and Information Sciences, Makerere University. AirQo has a growing network of low cost air quality monitors and uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to collect, analyse, predict, raise awareness and inform policy decisions.

This fellowship is under a collaborative project between Makerere University and the University of Sheffield and will develop and deploy machine learning methodology to analyse air pollution data from Kampala, in order to determine the source of the pollution and to aid the design of mitigating interventions. In particular, you role will include but not limited to: (1) developing sensor anomaly detection and multi-fidelity probabilistic sensor calibration models (2) modelling and quantification of the effect of the weather on the model (3) developing spatio-temporal models and infer pollution sources.

Position: Post-doctoral Research Fellow

Terms of Employment: Postdoctoral fellowship

Annual Stipend: ~$16,400 – $18,800 USD per annum

Contract: Initially, 1 year with potential for extension for another year.

Expected start date: Immediately

Duty station: Makerere University, Uganda with occasional travel to The University of Sheffield, UK.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • PhD in Computer Sciences, Mathematics, or Statistics or Machine learning

  • Effective communication skills and a desire to be part of an international multi-party collaboration, and be willing to travel to Sheffield (approximately one trip per year).

Aptitude Exam (Paper 1) Results for the Mature Age Entry Scheme 2026/2027

The Office of Academic Registrar, Makerere University has released Aptitude Test Examination results for the Mature Age Entry Scheme Examinations held on Saturday 13th December 2025.

The Candidates who scored 50% and above in the aptitude test passed the aptitude examination and will have their programme -specific examination paper marked. Those who scored less than 50% failed.

The Academic Registrar, Makerere University invites applications for admission to Graduate Programmes (Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and Doctoral Degree Programmes) for the 2026/2027 Academic Year. Applicants should have obtained at least a first or second class degree (or its equivalent) from a Chartered University at the time of completion. Applicants should also possess a Uganda Certificate of Education (or its equivalent) and a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (or its equivalent).
