Call For Abstracts: 1st Great Lakes and Catchment Management Conference

The School of Agricultural Sciences, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), Makerere University, Kampala Uganda

Makerere University College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences (CAES), Ministry of Water and Environment (MoWE) and Partners in water, land and environmental conservation are organizing the 1st Great Lakes and Catchment Management (1st GLACAM) Conference due to take place from 5-7 June 2019 at the Water Resource Institute, Entebbe, Uganda.

The theme of a 2-day conference is “Protecting Water and Land Resources in Africa for Climate Change Adaptation and Improved Livelihoods”

Adoption of drought tolerant maize varieties among smallholder maize farmers in Kamuli and Masindi Districts

A maize demonstration plot at the Makerere University Agricultural Research Institute Kabanyolo (MUARIK), CAES, Wakiso Uganda

The overall aim of this study was to assess the status of adoption of drought tolerant maize varieties (DTMs) by smallholder farmers in Masindi and Kamuli districts. Using survey data from 190 farm households, the study sought to characterise smallholder maize farmers in the two districts, assess Drought Tolerant maize attributes preferred by smallholder maize farmers, determine the rate of adoption and factors that influence the adoption of drought tolerant maize varieties in Masindi and Kamuli districts.

The London School of Economics and Political Science has been awarded funding to establish a Gender, Justice and Security Hub, with Makerere University as one of the Lead Research Partner Institutions. The Acting Principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Makerere University, Dr. Josephine Ahikire is Co-Director on the programme and will serve as a member of the Executive Group that will oversee the Hub’s research agenda, strategy impact and engagement plans.

Prevalence and factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding among children aged 0 to 6 months at Benadir Hospital in Somalia

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding for children aged 0 to 6 months attending the immunization unit at Benadir Hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for collecting information on demographics and socio-economic characteristics and breastfeeding practices among 334 mothers. Additionally, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) of breastfeeding mothers and key Informant interviews with health workers were conducted.
