On Tuesday the 19th June 2018, RAN hosted two innovators who pitched their ideas having registered for this opportunity online. Pitch Tuesday sessions are open to all students, faculty and the community at large. ‘We even conduct some Pitch Tuesday sessions in a preferred local language! That is how much the multidisciplinary team at RAN Lab is flexible to society needs’ noted Harriet Adong, RAN Communications Manager.

The Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme supports higher education cooperation between countries in Africa. The scheme aims to promote sustainable development and ultimately contribute to poverty reduction by increasing the availability of trained and qualified high-level professional manpower in Africa. The programme's objective is to improve the skills and competencies of students and staff through enhanced mobility between African countries.

Matibabu wins the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation

Matibabu, a device which tests for malaria has won the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. Matibabu is a portable parasite based hardware device that uses the principles of light scattering and magnetism to detect malaria.

Progress of Matibabu

Since inception, Matibabu has undergone several iterations to better refine the product towards developing a market-ready version.

Women in Leadership Roles in Science and Innovation Engagement at RAN Lab

Leveraging and sharing knowledge has always been a continuous process! The afternoon of Monday July 16, 2018 provided an opportunity for the RAN team to host the Women in Science and Innovation team (40 participants), as a partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Uganda. This was one of the activities the Embassy arranged when they hosted Prof. Geraldine (Geri) Richmond in Uganda.

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) is pleased to release the draft programme for the Sixth African Higher Education Week and the RUFORUM Biennial Conference which is scheduled for 22-26 October, 2018 at the Kenyatta International Convection Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.  The theme of the biennial is “Aligning African Universities to accelerate attainment of Africa’s Agenda 2063”

Mak-Karolinska Institute to establish a Centre of Excellence in Non-Communicable Diseases

a delegation from Makerere University led by Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, together with a team from Karolinska Institute (KI), Sweden led by Prof. Ole Petter Ottersen during the discussions.

On 8th  June 2018, a delegation from Makerere University led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, together with a team from Karolinska Institute (KI), Sweden led by its President, Prof. Ole Petter Ottersen concluded discussions on further areas of collaboration.

During their meeting at KI, the delegates agreed to jointly fundraise for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs). They also underscored the need to develop capacity in managing the growing incidences of NCDs, particularly stroke, breast cancer and others.

D-Lab prioritizes projects from marginalized or poverty-stricken communities, and has an extensive international network.

iGEM Makerere Team wins US$2,000 Promega Corporation Grant

The iGEM Makerere Team has won another small grant from the Promega Corporation, U.S. thanks to an application submitted recently. Promega is a global leader in providing innovative solutions and technical support to life scientists in academic, industrial and government settings.

According to the announcement by Promega the 10 recipients were: Unesp Brazil, RDFZ-China, UI Indonesia, TecMonterrey GDL, Makerere Uganda, NYU Abu Dhabi, Manchester, Edinburgh OG, Tacoma RAINmakers, and Stony Brook.
