Mak Printery releases the EAC Common Market Protocol Book

The Makerere University Printery in partnership with the Foundation for Legal Research and Consultancy LA (FOLERECO) Arusha, Tanzania are proud to announce the release of the book titled “EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY COMMON MARKET PROTOCOL”

The 182page book material was developed by FOLERECO and clearly highlights the guidelines for the free movement of Labour, Goods and Services across all the member countries. Furthermore in 2008, EAC commenced negotiations with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and agreed to an expanded free trade area.

The signing of the Common Market Protocol on 20 November 2009 by the EAC Heads of State came with increased expectations from various stakeholders including; investors, traders, transporters, professionals and students among others regarding how their lives would be impacted by the same. The Protocol came into force on the 1st July 2010.

The Common Market is expected to achieve; A smoothly functioning Customs Union, Free movement of persons, labour and services, Free movement of capital and enhance macro-economic policy harmonization.

The Protocol provides for cooperation in many other areas such as; protection of cross-boarder investments, research and technological development, agriculture and food security.
